Incorrelation with the Titanic’s 100^th anniversary, Argyle Fine Art will be launching its latestexhibition, titled “PAPER THREADS” Thiscollection of locally crafted paper dolls will depict fashions from the early1900’s and more. Submissions are welcome from artists of all backgrounds!! Ifyou’re in the fine arts, fine crafts, animation, graphic, or fashion design… wewant to see your interpretation of this project! Please read our submissionguidelines, and start creating!

Submissionguidelines:

- Artistsmay submit any number of paper dolls/ outfits

- Works must be original, hand crafted, andcreated using ARCHIVAL paper.

- Dolls canbe rendered in any medium: paint, ink, watercolour, graphite, collage, etc…

- Dolls canbe created in any size (within reason, and consideration for our display space)

- Worksshould somehow reflect the period/fashion of the Titanic. Our focus here isreally on

fashion/clothing ... meaning, a full figure(body) is not necessarily required.

- We askthat you cut out your paper doll before submitting, don’t forget to includesome tabs :)

- DO NOTframe, mount or put hanging devices on the backs of your works. We want to beable to

artfully

display these pieces in Vintage trunks.

- Pleasemake sure your works are signed (either on the front or the back)

- DEADLINEFOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 6^TH. So get cracking folks!!! That’sonly one month away!

Andrew MacDonald: Works On Display In Our Front Window

We do not overlook you folks who don't always have the opportunity to take a stroll into the gallery, but do make a point of walking (or driving) by our front windows to sample what's on display.

At any time of day, be it 9:00 am, 2:00 pm, or 1:00 am, our windows are always

shining with a selection of our our favorite local artists.

And you guessed it...We now have Andrew MacDonald on proud display!!

Andrew's repeating boyhood symbols arecoated in resin, giving them a super high gloss finish. They're alsopainted on distressed, re-purposed wooden panels, which adds to theirwonderful nostalgic appeal.

Pleeease make a point to view these in person, because they're IMPOSSIBLE to photograph.

(sorry Andrew. I tried...) You'll all just have to take a stroll by our front windows and see for yourselves.

Despite the sideways freezing rain coupled with chilly high winds, we had a full house at the opening. I don't think we've ever squeezed so many art lovers into one place. Hello people and welcome to the last sneak peek until Friday night, when we celebrate all 200 works that have been submitted for the wonderful "Pre-Shrunk" show. Again, we'd like to offer a very special thanks to all the participating artists for making this a special event!

Make sure to check out ALL of the works at www.argylefineart.com after the show has opened. Each work is priced at $175 and measure just 4" x 5" .

Today's sneak peek comes from artist Isabelle Pineau who we met last year through the Pre-Shrunk show. Many of you may know Isabelle, as she works at DeSerres across from the gallery and often pops by the gallery for a quick hello or inspiration. Isabelle has created three works for the show. The works are made up of carefully cut and painted paper by Isabelle on canvas.. Her work has a childlike magic about them which we adore.

Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek #14: Melissa Townsend

YES! Melissa Townsend has created a few owl paintings for the Pre-Shrunk show...in case you are one of many that were wondering! Pretty neat to think that we only just met Melissa last year around this time, with her participation in the show last year.

Since then, we've been very lucky to get to know her and her work throughout the year, hosted a SOLD OUT show in June and we're excited to be working toward a show with Melissa for this coming June or July. Although there will be owls, expect to see Melissa branch out a bit more, and explore a few other things this season with a fundraising element too! We can hardly wait!

Until then, may we introduce wide-eyed "Wyatt"...who makes us smile. Hope he brightens your day too! Come see his four friends this Friday....and take one home with you.

Jono has a sense of humour like no other in our roster of artists.

His whit and sense of slap stick comedy are always bubbling beneath the surface

of his paintings. This year's submissions in our pre-shrunk exhibition

do not disappoint - Jono has painted familiar childhood icons turned into

menacing creatures... muahaha

Mark Brennan is a widely collected artist at Argyle Fine Art. We are looking forward to hosting his solo show at the gallery, in March. The show will feature not only his paintings, but the sounds and images that he collects while painting on site. Expect to hear what Mark heard and watch for a video trailer larger than life, that will play at night projected through our windows leading up the show! We can hardly wait! Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek #11: Mary Garoutte

WOW! We were sooooo happy to receive work by Mary Garoutte for the Pre-Shrunk show this year. We've been working with Mary throughout the year on various projects such as Spontaneous Lunch Art. Many of you know her for her miniature watercolour paintings that she sets in resin- little gems and wearable art at it's finest. But Mary also loves to paint with oils, and we think you'll agree that the results are wonderful. This is just one example! We're also happy to let you know that we are planning a solo show of work by Mary in July -stay tuned here for more info on that soon.

Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek #10: Marianne Collins

We were delighted to hear that artist Marianne Collins was going to participate in Pre-Shrunk this year! Some you may remember her work from a few years ago, as Marianne used to live in Halifax and attended NSCAD University.

Marianne calls Montreal home now, and is continuing her art practice there. Many people may know Marianne for her printmaking. This work is an original drawing using ink, coloured pencil and spray paint.

Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek #9: Gail Hodder

....and now for something completely different...a Pre-Shrunk work , in metal!
This work is by artist Gail Hodder from Prince Edward Island , who we've only just met but who did attend NSCAD and now works as an educator at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

The work is called "A silver cloud for you, a Silver cloud for Me" and it's made using brass, copper, nickle silver, steel, sterling silver, moonstone freshwater pearls and swarazski crystal.

We're just loving the diversity of mediums used in the upcoming Pre-Shrunk show..Hard to believe it's almost here now!

Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek #8: Adrienne Godbout

Adrienne Godbout just wrote to tell us that her pre-shrunk works are in the mail!! Ah.....it's been like Christmas everyday at the gallery lately, as we uncover new little works by over 50 artists from all over Canada. If you've been into Argyle Fine Art in the last year, you will remember Adrienne's work as it often has bold colours, spanning panoramics with a focus on architecture. Why does she paint houses with no windows? You'll have to ask her in person at her solo show at the gallery in May. But for now, enjoy these wonderful new small pieces by Adrienne....we can hardly wait to check the mail!

Pre-Shrunk Sneak Peek # 7: Mary Jane Lundy

Every year, we are always impressed with the submissions for Pre-Shrunk and are reminded of how important shows like this are for artists to try new things! It's not as easy to create a small piece as it may seem. Mary Jane Lundy is no stranger to Argyle Fine Art-many of you know her from her whimsical clay fish, birds and fountains .We were over the moon to see what she created for this year's show. It's not at all what you may have expected.

This work is called "Lest We Forget" . It is made mostly from clay, with plastic toy solidiers from the 1950's. The words "Lest We Forget" form the refrain of "Recessional", by Rudyard Kipling. The phrase offers a warning about the perils of hubris and the inevitable decline of imperial power.The phrase later passed into common usage after World War I across the British Commonwealth especially,becoming linked with Remembrance Day observations; it came to be a plea not to forget past sacrifices, and was often found as the only wording on war memorials, or used as an epitaph.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from everyone here at Argyle Fine Art! What a year it's been too! It's hard to believe that last year on this very day, we were loading up the last of the things at our old gallery location at Historic Properties and heading to Barrington Street. That was a great feeling...but a scarey one too. In this economic climate, one never knows what to expect.

But to our surprise, our new home has been wonderful!! Barrington Street is blossoming again! You have all supported us by buying art here, supporting our artists, coming out to shows and events and for voting for us in the BEST OF HALIFAX poll as second best gallery in Halifax; second only to the provincial gallery, AGNS. Wow. THANK YOU!

We are looking forward to bringing you a very exciting year of art in 2012! The year will really get going here, with PRE-SHRUNK- a HUGE group show opening on January 27th. See you then, if not before.

It's hard to believe that this year's Pre-Shrunk opening at Argyle Fine Art, on Friday, January 27th will also mark the first full year of us at this wonderful new location on Barrington Street. Please join us in celebration and don't forget to purchase a pre-shrunk voucher before January 15th!

Until January 15th, you can purchase a voucher for $150 that will entitle you to a miniature work valued at $175 BUT more you will also get a sneak peek at the show before anyone else and have first pick the evening of the show. We’ve been very busy here at Argyle Fine Art, receiving newworks bygallery artists almost daily! Every Year we host an exceptional group show called Pre-Shrunk,

where our most talented artists are asked to create art pieces that measure 4" x 5".
This show receives an abundance of outstanding artwork, and offers a diverse range of styles and mediums. There's always SO MUCH to choose from! Oils, watercolours, even ceramic! This is a juried exhibition, so all the pieces exhibited are sure to be of the highest quality.

All Pre-Shrunk pieces are priced at $175.

Vouchers on the other hand, are priced at $150...
that's a $25 savings!!

Voucher owners are entitled to both a piece in the show, and a place in line. Say for instance you purchase voucher #1, this means you get the FIRST pick from the entire group show. Neat eh? That's why we think vouchers would make such a great gift, especially for those who would rather allow their loved ones to choose their own artwork.

Ed Beals - Ray Guns!

KRUPP's JV-7 aka The Schmelzen Ray

A classic example of substance and style, the Krupp's JV-7 was issued to officers in the Combined European Forces. The "Schmelzen Ray" was the only handheld ray weapon utilizing AMDF (angular muon distortion field), a system usually reserved for much larger field guns. It was the addition of a replaceable wide-band JenVac capsule that made it possible to put the power and

stability of a true melting ray in such small and elegant package.

SYNCRO - RRX3 a.k.a. The Rocket Ranger

Build in the former USSR, the "Rocket Ranger" was notoriously unreliable and difficult to maintain. In spite of being prone to misfiring and even exploding when over-heated, the Ranger was devastatingly effective weapon and widely considered to be the most powerful of all the hand held ray-based weapons.

FG-ASME B16 a.k.a. Tiny Tim

Affectionately known as "Tiny Tim" the FG-ASME B16 was one of the lightest ray gun sidearms ever built. But don't let the small size fool you.This fluctuating graviton style asynchronous metaphasic emitter had an axionic pulse rate of one every 3/600ths of a microsecond. More than enough kick to disintegrate a squad of alien foot soldiers. The distinctive shark fin heat dissipater was often subject to abuse, most famously as a ration tin opener, making intact examples highly prized by collectors.

The Kids Are Alright.

It's dark and pouring outside, and our gallery patrons are looking a little sad and soggy this afternoon. If there's a bright side, it's that the kids are alright... infact, you could even say that they're wonderful.

We were surprised this afternoon by a lovely crew of young people who set out delivering pretty flowers to some of the local business downtown. Why? Just because. Who purchased/collected the flowers? They did. Did they want anything in return? Nope. Are we smiling now? Yup.

Our new little potted plant came with strict instructions: Don't Forget to be Awesome!

So if you see any of these faces below around town, give them a pat on the back. They certainly brightened our day here at the gallery, and we hope we can thank them again sometime soon!

Susan Malmstrom has once again, provoked our senses using her evocative style of photography. In her latest series, she guides us through complex layers of imagery that are both haunting and beautiful. Make sure you take a moment to read her artist statement below:

Artist’s Statement

Since thelate 1980s, my work has consisted of still-life photographs, originally usingantique processes, such as Vandyke and salted paper printing, invented duringthe earliest days of photography. In2004, my method shifted dramatically, and now employs digital technology. Although contemporary media presentdifferent challenges than those of the 19th century, my work remains faithfulto transforming real objects existing in time and space into allegoricalimagery exploring personal vs. collective memory. Moving beyond the idea of literal documentation or objectivetruth, I attempt to subvert photography’s ability to record the minutia of theeveryday world in order to find the realities that exist beneath the surface.

For Pictures Within Pictures, new settingsare created for vintage found photographs, using every day objects, frames, andvegetation from my Nova Scotia garden, in order to explore how vintage imagescan be altered when they are removed from any original context and manipulatedinto a completely different framework. What does a photographic image from the 1890s, or the 1940s, say to usnow? Our collective memory disallows looking at an image withoutbringing some sense of history (personal or collective) to its narrative. No matter how elaborate or dense the newlycreated context may be, the photograph within it still retains a layer ofelusiveness, as it cannot escape entirely from its own time encapsulaton.

We were absolutely delighted while unwrapping these treasures - Kevin Roach has just graced our gallery with a new collection of work and we can't wait to show you. Assembled from vintage household parts and objects, re-purposed as a series of nautical inspired sculptures. Each piece is perfectly framed in an old drawer or box so that it can hang nicely on the wall, or sit upright on a mantel.

The longer you spend with each piece, the more familiar the individual parts become.

Is that an old toothbrush holder filled with picture buttons? Well of course it is!

It's next to impossible to capture exactly how incredible these works are through photograph.

Kevin's collection of curiosities inspire nostalgia in the best possible way...

If you've been in the gallery over the last few weeks, you've likely noticed the earth shaking effect of jack hammers, the profane sound of construction workers, and the distinct smell of paint mixed with drywall dust.

Trust us when we say that it's for the greater good (it's what we've been repeating over and over in our heads) because WE'VE GOT NEW NEIGHBORS!

Infact, we have three new neighbors moving directly into our building, and lots of great

businesses moving in and around Barrington street.

Barry Colpitts Saturday, April 9th

This Saturday, April 9th, is the day that Barry Colpitts returns to Argyle Fine Art for a special carving demonstration. To lead into this exciting demonstration, Barry stopped by the gallery to meet with Breakfast Television for an interview, and brought along a new flock of friendly carvings.

Tomorrow, Barry will be working away on a large rabbit in our front window from 1-3:30, and may even bring a few more folk carvings for us to enjoy. Stop by and watch him skilfully carve away at a block of wood with homemade tools in death defying techniques that will make you wince (we're shocked that he still has all ten digits...)
